The civil uprising in Syria is now entering its 18th month and the level of violence continues to escalate.

Embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been hampered by an international arms embargo and strict trade sanctions from the outset. On the flip side, while Western leaders voice concern for the safety of the Syrian people, they continue to furnish the Free Syrian Army rebels with increasingly sophisticated weaponry.

Exclusive Esprit de Corps Interview: Farewell to 'Uncle Walt' PDF

On Monday October 15, Esprit de Corps publisher Scott Taylor sat down with Chief of Defence Staff Walter Natynczyk for our final interview before the general retired. What follows is an edited version of that one-on-one conversation.

EdeC: General, first let me thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview. Your Change of Command Parade is just 14 days away and you must be swamped with the handover process?

CDS: I am looking forward to just setting through the next two weeks, I was just in Quebec City yesterday, saying farewell to about ninety soldiers heading off to Kabul. I’ll try to get to Wainwright later this week to visit the troops on exercise Maple Resolve. It’s the last of my visits of that kind with the boys and girls out in the field. Then, you know, it’s time to get ready for the ceremony for two weeks from today.

EdeC: I understand that you’re going to scale the parade back a little bit. There will be no tank driving you off into the sunset like your predecessor?

Esprit de Corps magazine and Nexter Systems held a reception at the Rideau Club on Wednesday, to unveil the new name for Nexter’s armoured infantry combat vehicle (VBCI). On hand for the event was Mike Duckworth, Senior VP of Nexter, David Pratt, former Minister of National Defence and representatives from the French Embassy.

Esprit de Corps conducted a nationwide naming competition for the VBCI, running ads in their magazine and website, before turning the entries over to a panel that included Lieutenant-General (ret’d) Andrew Leslie, Queen’s University Professor Douglas Bland and Major-General (ret’d) Clive Addy. The VBCI is in the running for the Canadian Army’s Close Combat Vehicle (CCV) program.

The panel narrowed the names down to five contenders for the VBCI: Polar Bear, Wolverine, Scorpion, Grenadier and Muskox.

Baird coming to his senses? PDF

It would appear that after more than 26 months of violent strife in Syria, Canada’s Foreign Affairs minister is beginning to understand that this is a very complex equation.

In the early days of the uprising in Syria, which coincided with similar demonstrations in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, John Baird made it clear to Canadians that we were on the side of the angels.

This, of course, meant that in each case we were for the pro-democracy-loving mobs in what was quickly dubbed the Arab Spring movement.

Fear and panic created by the media PDF

May 1, 2013

The success of a terrorist attack lies in the perpetrator’s ability to create a fear far in excess of the actual threat or damage caused.

In this, the media proved to be the Tsarnaev brothers’ best ally, with its extensive and continuous coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing.

While the attack was shocking and horrific, the casualty count of three dead and two dozen seriously injured was miraculously low, given the circumstances.
