LAME DUCKS

VS

GOFO's

Hockey Afternoon in the National Capital:

The Lame Ducks stand tall, but come up short

On Wednesday 1 June, a hardy band of fans gathered in the Ottawa University arena to watch the Lame Ducks (foreign military attaches) take on the General Officers & Flag Officers (GOFO’s) in a friendly game of hockey.

While most Lame Duck players have never skated before being posted to Canada, these international military officers are true warriors in spirit. The GOFO’s were coming off a recent 4:3 defeat at the hands of the Esprit de Corps’ Commandos the previous Thursday (see full story and photos at link) and as such they were keen to avenge their stinging loss. In the absence of CDS General jon Vance, the GOFO’s had Vice Chief of Defense Staff, Guy Thibault on the ice to captain their squad. The GOFO’s jumped out to an early lead, but the Lame Ducks soon found their stride and were able to tie the game at 4 when the buzzer sounded to end the second period. The third period was all GOFO’s as they managed to beat Lame Duck goaltender, Haitao Zhu twice, and then they hung on for a 6:4 win. The real winners were the Military Family resource Center – National Capital Region, as they received a cheque for $25,000 courtesy of the funds raised by sponsors and fans at the game.

Bravo Zulu to Louise Mercier for organizing and executing yet another successful hockey event.
